Arthritis Treatment

Osteoarthritis can develop over time as your pet gets older. Indeed, a large percentage of our mature patients suffer from joint stiffness and pain. Our younger patients may also suffer from an inherited skeletal disorder. There are many therapeutic options to help relieve your pet’s arthritis. These will be further discussed during the consultation once the vet has received the results from the additional tests needed to make a diagnosis. What causes arthritis?

Arthritis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the joints. It may be caused by genetic, environmental or nutritional factors.

What are the signs of arthritis in cats and dogs?

Arthritis is the inflammation usually caused by osteoarthritis. Symptoms can vary from pet to pet, but here are some signs that may indicate that your pet has arthritis:

• Difficulty getting up and sitting/lying down
• Difficulty jumping onto the couch or climbing the stairs
• Less interested in physical activity
• Walking and running slowly
• Stiffness, limp or tremor

What are the treatment options to relieve arthritic pain?

Once a diagnosis has been made, we will be able to suggest several therapeutic options, ranging from diet, supplements and medications. Specialized diets, intra-articular injections to supplement synovial fluid and easy-to-administer medication in the form of treats can be used to reduce your pet’s discomfort. If needed, we can also refer you to a specialized regional centre for more specific treatments.

Can I give my pet aspirin?

We don’t recommend giving any medication to your pet without a prior veterinary examination and approval.
